What is Acne?

A study from the British Skin Foundation has found that 95% of acne sufferers say it impacts their daily lives and around 63% experience lower self-confidence.

We understand that it can massively effect those who suffer from this skin condition, but what really is it?

In this blog, we clear up the misconceptions and reveal the truth about acne.

What is it?

Acne is a non-contagious skin disease which affects the hair follicles. As dead skin cells and sebum collect in these hair follicles (or ‘pores’ as they’re more commonly referred to) they create a plug or ‘blocked pore’ which in-turn develops into a pimple.

What causes it?

Although the cause of acne is unknown, Doctors believe that certain factors might encourage a flare up. Often genetics play a huge part in this but also hormonal imbalance’s, birth control medication (once you stop), stress, heat, sun and humidity, diet, and current skincare regime.

Where does it strike?

Mainly the face, back and chest. Acne commonly occurs during puberty when the sebaceous (oil) glands come to life, the glands are stimulated by male hormones produced by the adrenal glands of both males and females.

Who does it strike?

Acne is the most common skin disease meaning people of all races and ages can suffer.

However, it is most common in teenagers and young adults. With an estimated 80% of male and females between the ages of 11-30 suffering from acne outbreaks at some point in their lives, some people in their 40s & 50s still get acne.

How can it be treated?

There are a variety of solutions to treat acne, from topical gels and lotions to retinoid and antibiotics.

We offer the leading laser treatment for acne to dramatically reduce blemishes caused by this condition. The Harmony® AFT laser works quickly and thoroughly to destroy acne bacteria. It permeates the tissue to precisely target the problem areas. As the light penetrates the tissue, it begins a chemical reaction beneath the surface, natural molecules increase which work to kill the bacteria and prevent acne at its source.

The Laser Acne Treatment is very effective, providing a virtually painless experience compared with other non-surgical alternatives. After your course of treatment, you may notice improvement not only in your inflamed acne, but in scarred areas as well.
