The Facts: Male Skin

We know that skin health is determined not only by genetics, but lifestyle choices too and with male clients investing more time into their skin, it’s important to understand how it works and the best ways to treat it.

Dry texture?

Male skin is 25% thicker with less underlying fat and more collagen than female skin. Whilst thicker skin appears fuller and plump, it tends to be more resilient which can leave it feeling dry and rough.

Regular exfoliation is key – not only will it rid dead skin cells but it’ll also prevent ingrown hairs. Microdermabrasion is an effective, non-invasive treatment; the tool sprays a stream of tiny crystals onto the outermost layer of skin, it is this process that breaks down the surface. The Microdermabrasion tool uses a mild suction to collect the dead cells, skin debris and used crystals.

Hormones increase skin ‘oiliness’

Hormones play a significant role in male skin – Androgen Testosterone is the dominant hormone and is responsible for increased hair growth and sebum production, which explains why some males are likely to suffer from acne.

Along with regular facial treatments and the correct daily skincare regime, excess oil on the surface of the skin can be controlled. Routine maintenance will ensure that the skin is clear of impurities, allowing for better circulation and improved cell renewal to keep that youthful appearance for longer.

Shaving causes irritation

An intense shaving regime can cause razor burn, making the skin overly sensitive and sore.

We are experiencing a year on year rise from our male client base wanting to be hair free. Traditionally we start men with body or facial waxing, however with demand for a more permanent solution, Laser Hair Removal is the perfect answer to rid unwanted hair for good.

The Soprano ICE Platinum Laser combines 3 laser wavelengths into a single innovative hand-piece, simultaneously targeting different tissue depths as well as anatomical structures within the hair follicle. The ice-cold cooling tip ensures the skin is kept cool and comfortable throughout the procedure which allows for painless, yet highly effective hair removal on the face and body.

Prevention is better than cure

It is common for men to only take care of their skin when a problem arises, but it’s vital to educate all of our clients, both male and female that prevention is better than cure! Although it may not be visible to you, a processional can detect underlying skin concerns and work to treat these.
